Ophelia’s Descent Into Madness Essay

Shakespeare, through his complex employments of imagery and emotional incongruity, orchestrates a splendidly point by point record of how Hamlet’s mental change filled in as the main thrust of Ophelia’s growing craziness and up and coming self destruction. He floods the early demonstrations with a looming feeling of disarray inside Ophelia, for her sentiments toward villa incredibly differentiate those of her sibling and father. Ophelia starts to eagerly notice her family’s guidance as the ruler ends up expelled from a clear example of thought. Be that as it may, in light of the fact that her affections for him are certified, this serves just to lift up her psychological strain. In the tallness of Hamlet’s garbled wrath, he furnishes Ophelia with a definitive mechanism for her resulting frenzy. The homicide of Polonius is the best among numerous variables that were contributed by Hamlet to the grave destiny of Ophelia. An introduction, made out of admoniti ons from Polonius and Laertes, is thoughtfully set up by Shakespeare during Ophelia’s inertial appearances in the play, helping in the groundwork for her ensuing mental decay. - Pol. What is between you? Surrender me reality. - Oph. He hath, my master, generally made a large number of his warmth to me. - Pol. Friendship, puh! You talk like a green young lady Unsifted in such risky condition. Do you accept his â€Å"tenders† as you call them? - Oph. I don't have the foggiest idea about, my ruler, what I should think. (I, iii, ln.107-113) Ophelia transparently pronounces her disarray. Polonius’ reaction is introduced in a way which is unmistakably planned to earnestly scorn Hamlet before his little girl, making evident his assessment of their contribution. His aim for her activities, be that as it may, will only amplify her disarray. Ophelia yields that she doesn't know about an answer with which to stop or even improve this circumstance. Hence, no preventive measures are taken, just permitting the circumstance to compound. Villages mind develops increasingly more blurred as his objective turns out to be clear, and amidst his swarming distraction, he pushes Ophelia to the point of mental breakdown. This idea shows up in the subsequent demonstration, after Ophelia first observes an unhinged Hamlet. - Oph. Master Hamlet †¦with a look so forsaken in indicate as though he had been loosed out of hellfire to talk about detestations - he precedes me - Pol. Frantic for thy love? - Oph. My master I don't have a clue be that as it may, I genuinely dread it. (II, I, ln. 87-97) Her disarray has developed into a condition of fear, and this fear will start to enter her awareness as it develops increasingly extraordinary. Polonius proposes that Hamlet may have succumbed to â€Å"the very bliss of love†. However, Ophelia’s reaction is particular in it’s dismal tone, for if love is the at risk power, she shows no type of fulfillment for it’s impact on Hamlet. During an experience later in the story, he tells Ophelia, - Ham. â€Å"†¦I loved you once - Oph. Surely, my ruler, you caused me to accept so - Ham. You ought not have trusted me, for uprightness can't so (vaccinate) our old stock however we will savor of it. I cherished you not. - Oph. I was the more bamboozled †¦And I, of women most deject and pitiable, That sucked the nectar of his musicked vows†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (III, I, ln.125-130,169-170) Once more, her psyche is turned by Hamlets automatic falseness. His detachment assaults and expends her guiltlessness, takes grasp of her psyche and at last devastates her soul. In the above statement, she depicts her assessment of Hamlet’s present character, that of an untruthful client. In addition, be that as it may, she feels naã ¯ve, putting undue fault on herself and extending the hole among herself and reality. As the approaching disaster turns out to be progressively obvious, Ophelia is at long last and totally devoured by the insanity of her wiped out brain. The most huge factor in this occasion is Polonius’ murder. Her condition is clarified by the ruler after she makes it self-evident. - King. Thick, and unwholesome in musings and murmurs. For good Polonius’ demise, and we have done yet greenly poor Ophelia separated from herself and her reasonable judgment. (IV,v, ln.81-85) Ophelia, who was once almost impeccable, presently minutes from self destruction, has been totally intellectually broken by Hamlet and has made it very self-evident. He was the destiny of her dad, and had clearly controlled her heartlessly. Her destruction is inescapable, for her lone love had sharpen distraught and efficiently decimated every one of that was her world. Shakespeare is particular in his depiction of this destruction. The conspicuous turns out to be only that when the point of the creator is recognized through the emblematic congruencies and occasions which definitely illustrated the heartbreaking decrease of Ophelia’s character. The creator gives an immense measure of portending in the early demonstrations. The lamentable saint at that point hauls her into a similar damnation that is his own domain. He achieves this by wiping out everything that had supported her. In the long run, a the elements created, she was overpowered by these demonstrations, a reality turns out to be simply a deception, and she succumbs to the furthest reaches of her own brain.

Word of the Week! Kluge Richmond Writing

Word of the Week! Kluge Richmond Writing Joe Hoyle in our Business School wanted to know more about this word, also spelled kludge (and pronounced klooj) on occasion. A kluge, involving how we connect to campus services from off campus, delayed this post. Its one of the worst kluges in how we use technology. But more on that in a bit. Ive always thought of kluges as dangerous, makeshift repairs such as the one pictured. Yet there is more to it than that.  The Atlantic ran a story, The Appropriately Messy Etymology of Kluge that shows how murky the terms origins have proven. At the same time, the usage remains clear: a kluge means an ad-hoc solution, usually technological, with hardware or software. It gained currency in the era of computer science. A kluge is the opposite of an elegant solution. The piece in  The Atlantic cites other kluges in our daily lives, such as the bolted-together labyrinth of the US Federal tax code. Id add the Interstate System, where no matter how many lanes we build, it never quite works and can grind to a halt after a single breakdown. Thats why I avoid Interstate travel at all costs, going by US Route or train. Yet no advanced part of our transit system merits the word kluge more than certain airports. Newark springs to mind, as does OHare. Yet Heathrow is my favorite kluge of all. No matter how often it gets a facelift or wonderful new terminal, it remains delightfully or maddeningly (depended on your departure time) higgledy-piggledy, to use a British term. Ive gone up a flight of stairs at Heathrow, down a hall, turned 180 degrees, down a flight of stairs, all to end up in sight of where I began. If that is not a kluge, I do not know what is. Shall we then get a ruling from that most UK of authorities on vocabulary, the OED? As fate has it, another klugethe way we establish security online: a labyrinth of passwords, VPN connections, dual-factor authentication, casting of spells and praying to dark gods, so-called secure clients delayed me. It took two days to consult the OED online, then publish a notice of this post to Spiderbytes, our campus e-mail list. I finally got through the decidedly klugey process to the OED;  the entry there notes that our word as slang of recent origin, for a system improvised, lashed together, in the end forming a distressing whole. Thats I-95, Heathrow, or my password list. The earliest example of our word comes from 1962: The word ‘kludge’ is..derived from the same root as the German  Kluge.., originally meaning ‘smart’ or ‘witty’ ‘Kludge’ eventually came to mean ‘not so smart’ or ‘pretty ridiculous’. There must be a better way for getting to content behind a paywall or password gate than our current kluge: Iris scans? Blood sample?  Replacing the kluge we currently use to identify ourselves online should be on the to-do lists of every major software company.   Go ahead: invent it and you, not Elon Musk, will be teh first to land a big silver passenger rocket on Mars. Well continue the blog through exams and the holiday break, so please send us words and metaphors useful in academic writing by e-mailing me (jessid -at- richmond -dot- edu) or leaving a comment below. top image courtesy of the Facebook group Bikers and Riders. Morrill Tariff the Real Cause of the Civil War

Over the years, some people have claimed the real cause of the American Civil War was a generally forgotten law passed in early 1861, the Morrill Tariff. This law, which taxed imports to the United States, was said to be so unfair to southern states that it caused them to secede from the Union. This interpretation of history, of course, is controversial. It conveniently ignores the issue of slavery, which had become the dominant political issue in America in the decade preceding the Civil War. So the simple answer to common questions about the Morrill Tariff is, no, it was not the real cause of the Civil War.   And people who claim a tariff caused the war seem to be trying to obscure, if not ignore, the fact that slavery was the central issue of the secession crisis in late 1860 and early 1861. Indeed, anyone examining newspapers published in America during the 1850s will immediately see that the issue of slavery was prominent. The continually escalating tensions over slavery had certainly not been some obscure or side issue in America. The Morrill Tariff, however, did exist. And it was a controversial law when passed in 1861. It did outrage people in the American South, as well as business owners in Britain who traded with the southern states. And it is true that the tariff was mentioned at times in secession debates held in the south just prior to the Civil War. But claims that the tarriff provoked the war would be an enormous stretch. What Was the Morrill Tariff? The Morrill Tariff was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President James Buchanan on March 2, 1861, two days before Buchanan left office and Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated. The new law made some significant changes in how duties were assessed on goods entering the country  and it also raised rates. The new tariff had been written and sponsored by Justin Smith Morrill, a congressman from Vermont. It was widely believed that the new law favored industries based in the northeast and would penalize the southern states, which were more dependent on goods imported from Europe. Southern states were strongly opposed to the new tariff. The Morrill Tariff was also particularly unpopular in England, which imported cotton from the American South, and in turn exported goods to the U.S. The idea of a tariff was actually nothing new. The United States government had first enacted a tariff in 1789, and a series of tariffs had been the law of the land throughout the early 19th century. Anger in the South over a tariff was also nothing new.  Decades earlier, the notorious  Tariff of Abominations  had angered residents in the South, prompting the Nullification Crisis. Lincoln and the Morrill Tariff It has sometimes been alleged that Lincoln was responsible for the Morill Tariff. That idea does not stand up to scrutiny. The idea of a new protectionist tariff did come up during the election campaign of 1860, and Abraham Lincoln, as the Republican candidate, did support the idea of a new tariff. The tariff was an important issue in some states, most notably Pennsylvania, where it was seen as beneficial to factory workers in various industries. But the tarriff it was not a major issue during the election, which was, naturally, dominated by the big issue of the time, slavery. The tariffs popularity in Pennsylvania helped influence the decision of President Buchanan, a native of Pennsylvania, to sign the bill into law. Though he was often accused of being a doughface, a northerner who often supported policies that favored the South, Buchanan sided with his home states interests in supporting the Morrill Tariff. Furthermore, Lincoln did not even hold public office when the Morrill Tariff was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Buchanan. It is true that the law went into effect early in Lincolns term, but any claims that Lincoln created the law to penalize the South would not be logical. Was Fort Sumter a "Tax Collection Fort"? There is a historical myth which circulates at times on the internet that Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, the spot where the Civil War began, was really a tax collection fort. And thus the opening shots of the rebellion by the slave states in April 1861 were somehow connected to the newly enacted Morrill Tariff. The attack on Fort Sumter. Getty Images   First of all, Fort Sumter had nothing to do with tax collection. The fort had been constructed for coastal defense following the War of 1812, a conflict which saw the city of Washington burned and Baltimore shelled by a British fleet. The government commissioned a series of forts to protect major ports, and the construction of Fort Sumter began in 1829, unconnected from any talk of tariffs. And the conflict over Fort Sumter which culminated in April 1861 actually began the previous December, months before the Morrill Tariff became law. The commander of the federal garrison in Charleston, feeling threatened by the secessionist fever overtaking the city, moved his troops to Fort Sumter on the day after Christmas 1860. Up to that point the fort was essentially deserted. It was certainly not a tax collection fort. Did the Tariff Cause the Slave States to Secede? No, the secession crisis really began in late 1860, and was sparked by the election of Abraham Lincoln. Politicians in the slave states were outraged by Lincolns electoral victory. The Republican Party, which had nominated Lincoln, had been formed years earlier as a party opposed to the spread of slavery. It is true that mentions of the Morrill bill, as the tariff was known before it became law, appeared during the secession convention in Georgia in November 1860. But mentions of the proposed tariff law were a peripheral issue to the much larger issue of slavery and the election of Lincoln. Seven of the states that would form the Confederacy seceded from the Union between December 1860 and February 1861, before the passage of the Morrill Tariff. Four more states would secede following the attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861. While mentions of tariffs and taxation can be found within the various declarations of secession, it would be quite a stretch to say that the issue of tariffs, and specifically the Morrill Tariff, was the real cause of the Civil War.

Is Being Fashionable a Sin Free Essays

â€Å"Don’t Judge a book from it’s cover† is a great phrase, but we do actually Judge appearance first before getting to know people. That first impression helps anywhere, and good knowledge of fashion, and being well groomed really helps. I think it was Marilyn Monroe that said, â€Å"Clothing should be tight enough to show you are a woman, but loose enough to show you are a lady†. We will write a custom essay sample on Is Being Fashionable a Sin? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Words to live by!! I want to tell them that being modest does NOT mean covering yourself in a shapeless denim bag of a dress that hides any last speck of femininity! It is possible to be beautiful, stylish, and modest. A move toward beautiful clothes that are modest and actually make the person look good is always needed in the fashion world. Remaining fashionable is also a status war in itself, because you can only attain the status at which you can personally afford. I find concept of something being â€Å"fashionable† quite puzzling. Why many people feel obliged to wear â€Å"fashionable clothes†? They don’t wear it because of aesthetic value – or do they? If something was fashionable last season and now it is not, does it mean that the aesthetic Judgment changed or do people recognize value in conforming to the majority? The answer is simpler than you think. â€Å"Fashion† is the effect, not the cause. Combine two separate concepts: First, that pleasure resulting from a certain aesthetic fades over time. So yes to your first question, it is the aesthetic value that changes. You can only eat ice cream so long until you get tired of eating it, even though nothing changed about the ice cream. Similarly, people get tired of seeing the same kind of clothes being worn all the time. There is a certain pleasure in novelty. Second, fashion has a social value, as well as an individual one. Socially, what people ear is a significant part of our environment, so it’s more pleasing to see people well- dressed. Individually, to wear clothes that other people find pleasing arouses our vanity, so we have a personal interest in pleasing our society. â€Å"Fashion† refers to this careful equilibrium between social pleasure and individual vanity. It’s more of a sign claiming â€Å"I’m up to date† than any aesthetics, but being up to date is very valued by many people, even if it is about something as irrelevant as clothing and even if being up to date about irrelevant things implies an opportunity cost and earns lost opportunities to be up to date about relevant things. Subconscious thoughts are not characterized for being very deep. TOPIC: People nowadays are paying a lot of attention to fashion. Do you think this is a good thing? As a kind of art, fashion has its own values and benefits for people such as making them more beautiful. Nowadays, people are paying a lot of attention to fashion and I think this is a very good thing because of the following reasons. First, fashion makes people become more attractive. On the roads, a girl dressing in fashionable clothes always attracts more attention of people than one in outdated outfit. This is because as human beings, we all want something that is new and appealing rather than boring. And fashion, in this case, contributes a lot to the beauty of people. It makes them more pretty in apparels that are updated to the popular trends, which a number of people are interested in. Secondly, fashion indirectly builds up a healthy lifestyle. People who love fashion always want to be in the most up-to-date dress. However, these clothes are Just suitable for certain body shape, which is usually a thin one. Therefore, fashion and he love for it are encouraging more and more people to follow a healthful diet, to do exercise and to work out in order to have perfect bodies that are fitted in the clothes they like. Last but not least, fashion makes our world an interesting place to live in. If fashion did not exist, the world might be a dull place where all people wore the same things with the same color. We could never see attractive girls in fashionable clothes on the roads or youthful boy in hip hop costumes. Moreover, no fashion meaner no traditional costume, which is a unique part that differentiates each culture. Therefore, with cushion, people can enjoy a colorful world where everyone looks beautiful and attractive in their own fashion style. In short, I believe that the special attention of people to fashion is reasonable and needed to be encouraged. It is because fashion contributes a lot to better people’s appearance, to create a healthy lifestyle and a colorful world. Fashion is a sword TTT can heal or destroy. Ultimately in today’s age, Fashion Just destroys people’s lives. Fashion as healing: As an art, fashion can bring healing and meaning to people’s lives especially ones who are gifted in designing and have passion for it. As destructive. Too many to describe. Fashion sprung out from man’s perversity to want to dress to impress. To dress to look good so that who benefits? They benefit and feel better about themselves. Look presentable is the goal for most organizations but that has just set a mindset especially in work cultures where dressing good matters. It does really create stratifications and psychological stress on people to dress a certain way if not be ready to meet the Judgment or isolation in some cases. What do these benefit a person when they reflect back upon the impact of fashion in society? Not forgetting what many people above have indicated on fashion’s influence on self esteem and other matters. Fashion like science gives people a reason to have a Job and to feel good about it but it may actually be one of the reasons why people began to sin and erode the societal norms and family unities. Fashion makes people liberal in whatever they want such that they don’t have to care anymore bat people around. Making a statement is bold but a great way to make oneself unique and humans crave that because they need to stand out and make a marquee in the community. They want to feel significant and stand out from the crowd. I’m saying good that you stand out but if the assumptive effect of fashion leads to the detrimental destruction on human unity and communion, then fashion shall be no more than a subtle piece of timber waiting to explode in someone’s lives in some form of cheat or sick way. It really matters how you dress but many people’s lives have been testimonies of the human need to find acceptance and prominence in some way and fashion is really not a good way. Predictability is a fine line between looking good and attention seeking. Conclusion; Fashion destroys pulp’s lives very subtly and slowly if no appropriate boundaries are observed. Any since no one can restrict anyone from wearing anything, the trend is that fashion is one factor that harms our society and its a fact that no one can refute. Fashion here refers to the general consensus that dressing encompasses in our current day where we dress to show rather than to be presentable. That is the case TTT MAJORITY of brands try to proliferate. Sex sells is the message of the day. Just look at most of the biggest companies and you can be sure TTT is one of their drives in the company. Inner beauty not outer fashion ‘For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone,’ is a famous quote by Audrey Hepburn. Thus it is about the inner beauty not the outer fashion. Lol, thank you can’t think of anything else Self Respect has officially disappeared Women nowadays no longer dress to impress instead they dress to expose. Even though as women we may think that if we dress in a particular way, it would attract a guy we need to remember that if we respect who we are and how we portray ourselves, men will see this and respect us as well. Children as young as 12 are beginning to dress in clothes with a lot of exposure which is a sign that they are growing up. Children need to be children when they have the time and discovering and understanding grown up stuff should be left for their futures ahead. Makes people feel inadequate. Fashion is greedy and kills individuality. We are told that if you wear this or wear that, men will want you, etc. It is a load of rubbish. You can’t Just wear what you want because that isn’t ‘in’ for that year, or month, or even week. Fashion churns out lines from every high street store in the country. Style and creativity (great things) should not be synonymous with fashion This organized fashion world however is something else. A grotesque facet of humanity and offshoot of capitalism, it commodities and homogeneous almost everything on this planet. Ultimately, in order to reproduce the same shallow, greedy hierarchy behind the the finished/contrived products mediated and presented to us. It DOES damage the planet. It DOES kill animals. It DOES cause eating disorders. It DOES cause low self esteem. It fuels competitiveness and ignorance, and an irresponsible denial of reality. It causes us to ignore who we really are, who other people really are and values and issues which can’t be turned into something sexy and desirable. It causes us to overlook the wonderful non-airbrushed world we already live in, and it also causes us to refuse to acknowledge and solve the problems that are there in it. It causes us to rule out knowing entire groups of people, adopting entire ways of thinking. It also – despite its self-proclaimed image of not doing so – continues racism and tethering. For several years I fell into the fashion trap set for all people. Lured in by the glossiness, the perfection, the sex, glamour, the manipulative language and presentation. I looked at the world through fashion’s demeaning gaze and missed out on so much and hurt many people. I hurt my savings! I hurt my development! I wasted time. I hurt myself in developing an eating disorder and not embracing the absolutely wonderful person I already was. I also hurt people close to me, acquaintances, with the inherent Judgment fashion instills. I hurt people all around the world by paying attention to fashion, as fashion is a system relying on the people outside/at the bottom. I also no doubt perpetuated the harsh living standards for those at the bottom of the fashion industry making these clothes. And I damaged the planet. I don’t believe that the meaner meet the ends whatsoever and if fashion was really that great it wouldn’t need the billions and billions spent on constant PR advertising. I think our society is seriously lacking in education/seriously over indoctrinated by the media now if a several million dollar ad which taps into your biological/instinctive yearnings to sell you an unrelated and inanimate object is seen s totally normal and an art form. I would also bring into question fashion houses funding of things which maintain the hierarchy and the concept of ‘cool’ and commodities ‘e. Galleries, shows, films, celebrities, buildings and why Italian fashion houses donate millions to the maintenance of crumbling Italian buildings which fuel the rest of the worlds perception of beautiful Italy etc etc I know there are other issues in play. I wrote this very quickly and it may seem reductive but I’m positive my argument is stronger than those trying to reassure themselves fashion is a necessary art form. It deviates youngsters from studies Youngsters who pay more attention to fashion are less attentive to their studies and when it comes to devoting time to their academic career, they seem to be less concerned. This very attitude and the role of fashion Magazines is harming the very basics of the student community and they start feeling that their life would reach a certain height if they involve their selves in the fashion activities. It is making people’s minds more dependent on material things. It puts this image in your head that its all about how you look and what to wear and tepidity such as that. People are too dependent on what factories and what the government and what industries provide for them, when you can benefit you and your mind set by buying clothes that are for needs, not 50 million shirts to wear because you NEED every dang color. I understand that fashion is a way that people can express themselves, but when you take it too far and make it something you cannot live without, it shows true weakness in you AND society as a whole. Fashion rules the world. How many people do you know that don’t care about the way they dress? I could count mine on one hand. People spend money they don’t even have on clothes they will only wear once or twice at the most. When you spend money you don’t have, your creating a problem for yourself, and others. Once you go broke, you start to have to get help from the government. The government gets it’s money from the taxes and stuff from the people who choose to spend their money the right way. Is it fair either? Fashion is harmful to society It makes you feel not K each season. So in an effort to feel K you pressure yourself to buy. It’s not about creating peace or Joy in one’s, but rather reinforcing you’re not k unless you wear this designer or can afford this fashion. It’s a waste of human resources. Displays the â€Å"perfect† image to viewers This causes them to believe in that image and strive to achieve it in order to feed their need to look beautiful. They try to follow the way that they are shown in the fashion industry which will help them to be accepted and look like the perfect beautiful woman so that they can match the society’s requirements on beauty. Fashion depresses peoples freedom to be an individual Everyone here seems to be talking about clothes, but following fashion is in my mind, owing something that everyone is supposedly doing at the moment whether it be types of clothes, cars, behavior. Basically copying others Just to fit in or gain supposed social recognition. This can be harmful to a persons individuality, self esteem and general happiness if taken so far to stop people feeling they can freely be themselves. They have to follow the fashion no matter what the cost or think it’s k to treat people who don’t follow suit as outcasts. People are too bind to realize what fashion can do to person. I know this from experience and have watched people surfer. Fashion is killing naggers and some adults. Fashion is a waste of time. What happened to people expressing themselves? There are too many people wrapped up in what’s in or getting the next best thing. Also, the so-called fashion of â€Å"hot bodies†; what the hell is up with that? I watched a friend who is so called â€Å"fat and ugly† struggle with being in style and having a body people want to see. She starved herself and made herself throw up Just to fit in. Honestly, I used to be wrapped up in fashion, but my mom made me realize that I don’t need the newest things out there. I don’t need make up as I used to think. My mom showed me how to express myself through everything I do. I thank her for that! I may be only 16 but I know what it used to be like. I don’t care about fashion because being â€Å"in† is showing how low people can be and labeling them as trash, ugly, poor and worse. Fashion is harmful to a society and there is so much more around us. The sad thing is that most of the world is too blind to see it. People think fashion is so important because they always want to look good. Why do people always think fashion is so important? Well that is my question to you! Why is it so important? Why do you have to ooh good for people to like you? Some people in this world think that life is all about fashion! Well its not! Soot all you losers out there who think fashion is the best things in life.. Well stop thinking that. If you don’t stop thinking that then you will grow up to have no friends and will have the worst life ever. So I came here to say fashion is not everything in life and it is harmful to some girls. If girls think that they will be liked if they look good then they will grow up to be lonely and have no friends. So if your one of those people think about al the other important things in life before you go to a party or get dressed up. Young girls are trying to emulate celebrities/models and can’t differentiate the celebrity’s â€Å"public persona† wardrobe from their everyday â€Å"at-home† wardrobe. Young girls look to celebrities and/or models when trying to figure out fashion. They see what is dished out to them from the media or from in-person events. They don’t understand that much of what celebrities wear is worn specifically for the publicity. Some even for shock value Just to get into the forefront of the public eye. They see models with unrealistic body shapes and think that to be beautiful and successful they too have to be unhealthily thin. They don’t know how many models are throwing up the only calories their bodies receive on a daily basis. They don’t understand that celebrities that are dressing in body-hugging clothes and see-through tops are purposefully dressing that way because sex sells. Girls are so obsessed with being popular and accepted that they are trying to bypass being a girl and instead are trying to rush into being a woman. They aren’t even getting the chance to figure out for themselves the stupidity of celebrities who spend a good sum of money walking in 9†³ stilettos or shoes without heels all for the sake of publicity. It is obvious that the celebrity is Just hiding behind the same insecurity that the little girls have about being accepted and loved for who they are. For the record, people with real talent do not need to hide behind the facade of fashion absurdity. At schools, girls have started to rank themselves with fashion. Girls have started to decided who’s who by what they wear, and if one doesn’t have enough money to buy a certain piece of clothing, then see it being worn around schools, than their self-esteems can be lowered to a certain degree, and can be seen as a target to bullies, making the situation worse. I feel that fashion is harmful to society, because it promotes a culture that is based solely on appearance. The fashion industry encourages an unrealistic outlook for men and women in regards to their bodies and their looks. Women and men have gone to great extremes to mold their bodies into what the fashion world has decided is â€Å"perfect†, often disregarding their health and well-being, Just to look like the air-brushed, rail-thin models that the industry has deemed beautiful. Fashion is definitely harmful to society, because it inspires people to make potentially harmful lifestyle choices. Societal problems, such as anorexia and teen violence, are exemplary as to why fashion can actually be harmful. The media pushes the idea of beauty, as it is associated with apparently emaciated super models and punks wearing baggy pants and chains. Our children try to emulate what they are seeing on television. Some restrict their eating to the point that their health suffers, and others steal and even resort to violence to obtain clothes that look like those their television heroes wear. Fashion contributes to excluding certain individuals from society by labeling them as different. Fashion meaner being able to express oneself, but when an individual does not have access to fashionable clothes for financial reasons or cultural ones, this individual is generally excluded from society. Fashion contributes in directing our attention towards appearances, and it impacts in a negative way what people think of each other. It harms the environment, it promotes low paid work, an unhealthy self-image and futility and contributes to the increase of consumerism. Most clothes are made with processes that pollute the atmosphere and water sources, produce CO and other harmful gas, and a lot of waste. Most of the clothes are made y people who are paid around 12 cents a day and work in very poor conditions. The fashion industry employs models who are too thin and present their bodies as desirable and normal – how your body should be. And because the magazines, ads and whatnot make the clothes – and the whole industry – look so glamorous, people then feel tempted to buy more and more. This way, our society is becoming more image-centered, more futile and consuming. The fashion industry can be harmful to society, due to its unnatural display of weight requirements. In recent years, the alarming trend of fashion models’ unnatural weight acquirement has directly affected our society, both as consumers and as individuals dealing with self-esteem issues that turn into dangerous health conditions. Teen and preteen girls are especially susceptible to the trends that the â€Å"houses of fashion† determine are â€Å"in†. Fashion is harmful to society for several reasons and it shouldn’t be taken as seriously. Fashion is harmful to society because it makes people feel like they have to dress like the models and worst of all have to be the same size as the models. Children get shunned at school because of fashion and not wearing the top labels of clothing. It is unfair to Judge on fashion but that is what we do most of the time. I believe fashion is harmful to society. As the mother of a thirteen year old girl I can tell you that many things that are considered fashionable are ruining society. Whether it be the way they are wearing their clothes or what. There are also other issues that fall into this category television shows and radio. What is acceptable and what isn’t? It is all a very thin line but all of it is becoming our undoing. Fashion is not harmful to society as it simply personifies freedom Fashion allows people to express themselves in an individual way. It provides diversity in society which can only be a healthy thing. It shows that people have freedom and therefore allows them to relax and feel comfortable for who they are. Overall it makes for happier individuals which results in a more prosperous society. Fashion is the reason so many people are up to their neck in credit card debt. How many times do you go to a department store and not get asked by the cashier if you want a charge card for that store. The answer is almost never. Not only will the store charge you $100 for that pair of Sears, they will let you pay more than that if you onto want to pay for it all right now. Fashion is the biggest scam in consumer product because their products are never worth what you have to pay to be fashionable. Fashion beautifies the society There is nothing wrong with the fashion around us. Its Just our perspective that needs to looked upon and changed regarding fashion. Fashion is all around us so we can’t imagine a society without fashion. It would Just look like a prehistoric society without fashion. Fashion is the result of the man,s mental development, so there is nothing wrong with it. How to cite Is Being Fashionable a Sin?, Papers

He hence plays a major role in the Harlem renaissance movement of the 1920s and 1930s. The Harlem renaissance was a period in which various African American writers exploited literature to push for civil and political equality. There is a jazzy/ blues tone in a number of his poems as they circulate around themes of racial oppression within the early American society. The main contributing factor to these chosen themes was his personal experiences. We sha ll thus explore how these experiences are expressed in some of his poems. Negro The poem speaks about the writer’s identity as a Negro. The tone of the poem is one of anger and, at the same time, pride. He voices the grievances of the enslaved black community throughout history by making references to their afflictions under several masters. The poem has been written in the first person’s point of view and there is repetitive use of the words ‘I’ve been’ (â€Å"Negro†). This serves to emphasize the manner in which the black race has been subjected to various experiences in each verse. It portrays the black man’s positions as a victim of these experiences. The writer also uses similes such as ‘black as the night is black’ and ‘black like the depths of Africa’ to create illustrations of different views of the African race (â€Å"Negro†). Cross The poem Cross voices the writer’s personal experiences of living in a cross racial family. He conveys the ideal of racial reconciliation amongst white and black people by showing his remorse and apologies for wishing the worst to his parents. His parents came from different races. He contemplates their contrasting fates wherein one died in a place of fortune and prosperity while the other died in an environment of poverty (â€Å"Cross†).Advertising Looking for essay on literature languages? The message that is driven here is that racial background ultimately affects one’s fate due to the social setups that favored one over the other. The poem uses rhymes and meters in its structure thus setting up a rhythmic flow in its narration. The Weary Blues This poem is written in a very sad tone. It describes the poet’s encounter with a blues musician who, tired of his life, was contemplating suicide. The theme of death is prominent in this piece as it is featured in several lines. The song Weary blues contains the line ‘And I wish I had died’ which captures the theme of death (â€Å"The Weary Blues†). The final line ‘He slept like a rock or a man that’s dead’ clearly presents another instance of this theme. The message that the reader is left with is that the singer discussed in the poem had died deep down because of the loneliness he has been forced to live with. Lenox Avenue: Midnight The setting of this poem is a high traffic street on a rainy day. This can be seen from the references of rumbling street cars and rain in the second stanza. It seems to be a poem that speaks in second person to a lady. This may be explained by the use of the term ‘Honey’ in referring to the person addressed (Bass Rampersad 32). Once again, this poem, like others mentioned before, bears a melancholic mood. Song for a Dark Girl Song for a dark girl is a poem about the writer’s lover who was hung on a tree. The tone of the poem is one of anger filled with sadness. The writer seems to have a grudge against Jesus for letting his lover get slain despite his prayers for her protection. The theme of racial hatred is also brought out by the reference that the writer makes to ‘white Lord Jesus’ (â€Å"Song for a Dark Girl†). There is a metaphor used to describe love as a naked shadow. Red Silk Stockings This poem is written in old African American dialect. The use of alternative spellings for words such as ‘gal’ and incorrect grammar such as ‘you’s’, which means ‘you is’, are a demonstration of this (Bass Rampersad 105). The poem was written to ridicule African American female prostitutes who served white clients. Hence, there is an overall use of sarcasm in the poem.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Langston Hughes specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This can be observed when the writer says that the girls are too pretty to find any other form of work. Langston further mocks the black women by pointing out that they need to wear red stockings to show themselves to the white boys. This implies that the girls have an inferior view of themselves Theme for English B The poem Theme for English B has a very rich yet unstructured rhyme structure which can be seen to flow throughout the poem. The poem is written in the first person point of view. It seeks to introduce the reader to the identity of the writer as a young black student in a class full of white students. The writer hence responds to his English teacher’s assignment instruction to reveal his personality through his work. He points out that if he did, it might not be judged on the same background as other students. This idea is brought out by the symbolic reference of his work not being in the same color as that of the page he will write it on, i.e. white paper (â€Å"Theme for English B†). Dinner Guest: Me In Dinner Guest: Me, Langston explains how the powerful white personalities in the U.S civil society had been discussing the African American plight for equality during a dinner gathering. His reaction to the discussion at the dinner table where he has been invited is rather indifferent. What he is more afraid of is the outcome of the discussion and what it will mean to the African American community. The African American community, in this case, is symbolically referred to as ‘darkness U.S.A’ to show that they are looked down upon by the white race (â€Å"Dinner Guest: Me†). Conclusion Langston’s jazz poems fall into two thematic categories. There are those that bear a racially conscious theme and there are those that are simply introspective and personal. Some have both a personal and a socially conscious message. For i nstance, ‘Cross’ reveals Langston’s personal experiences in dealing with racial inequality and, at the same time, it communicates the message of racial tolerance by proposing forgiveness. Poems that have racial injustice as a central theme can be classified as either political or social.Advertising Looking for essay on literature languages? Let's see if we can help you!
